- This is certainly a problem that needs addressing. JAVA will be a hot
- area for people to work in. For one thing, it could put the Amiga back
- into the business environment without going through the trouble of having
- to develop pure business software... Anything developed in JAVA can bve
- run on ANY machine that is JAVA-enabled. Do we want the Amiga to be the
- only one not?

- At the Netscape developer's conference (I know, I know, but my company is
- a development partner) the following key application areas were
- demonstrated:
-
- Spreadsheets (Applix), Animation, VRML Interaction (now we're talking
- real interaction), and Database Access. While most people have done cute
- stuff so far, that is changing quickly. The Amiga needs JAVA. Here's a
- recommendation that I would like to see followed through -
-
- 1-Build Amigas with JAVA boards as part of the motherboard. This allows
- you extreme speed in working with Java and the Amiga could multitask with
- the virtual Java machine... Hmmm a Java capable machine that can also be
- a normal computer, for less than $800 would beat the pants off any
- network computer.
- 2-Get into web content (i.e. GIF Animations, HTML authoring,JAVA
- authoring, etc.) now! If AT waits it will all be in the Mac and PC
- hands.
- 3-Get a decent Webserver available for the Amiga that is roughly
- equivalent in capability to the Apache (or preferable Apache-SSL) web
- server. Make it efficient enough to run on an '030 machine.
-
- Let's see browsing, serving, authoring - all covered, just keep the costs
- down: s/w for less than $500 for the very best stuff that can rival the
- big boys on the other platforms, and Amigas with network cards for less
- than $2500 with a 1GB drive in it and we have a chance of being the best
- price/performance for the web.
-
- Here's where the Amiga could shine, especially in those markets that have
- been hard toi crack: US, Australia to name a couple. What's everyone
- think? Should begin to lobby these companies for web-oriented add-ons
- (save to VRML, handling of GIF animations, document-to-HTML converters)?
-
- Let me know what you think here!
